What does the Carderock Springs PTA do?
The PTA is a Parent- Teacher membership organization which creates a partnership between parents and staff to advocate for children, and to create the best learning environment possible for all students. Parents support teachers and staff with a variety of programs and funds that allow them to do extra activities. Parent volunteers supplement the existing curriculum with assemblies, family events and in-school activities that enrich student life. Carderock has an active PTA that works closely with the school staff to make Carderock a wonderful place to go to school.
The PTA advocates for policies which support our children’s welfare to the Board of Education and the Montgomery County Council through our Whitman Cluster Group. Our Cluster Rep represents Carderock to the Cluster, and she and the PTA President contribute to the Cluster Coordinator’s testimony before these bodies. In addition, we are represented by the Montgomery County Council of PTA’s, and to the Maryland House of Delegates by Maryland PTA. Your PTA President contributes comments which the CSES Executive Board has reviewed, for each of these testimonies as they arise each session.
Who Pays for the PTA Activities?
Membership dollars support the substantial budget that the PTA operates. These are supplemented by three fundraisers a year, such as: Sally Foster gift wrap, Giant gift cards, and an annual book sale. These fundraisers make it possible to fund large operations like International Night and cultural arts assemblies, which our children will remember fondly as a part of their Carderock years.
What are PTA meetings like?
PTA meetings are held at Carderock, on the first Tuesday of the month. Babysitting, by local middle school students, is usually provided. The community is welcome, and parents are encouraged to participate in the discussion of school events and plans. The PTA Executive Board meets monthly and supervises the many committees which plan and provide programs to students. Updates on these plans are provided at the general PTA meetings. Twice a year, speakers are invited to the meetings for Parent Education and Support. The principal and various team leaders are also invited to present at PTA meetings in order to keep the community apprised of their plans and progress. In the event that there is no urgent business, the meeting is removed from the calendar and the community is notified.
